NATIONAL AND LOCAL RECOGNITION

  • On October 15, 2008, WHEDCo's Education & Youth Development Program won The After-School Corporation’s (TASC) Partnerships with a Purpose Award. Recognizing WHEDCo’s outstanding partnership with PS/MS 218 over the past seven years, this award symbolizes WHEDCo’s commitment to providing engaging and enriching opportunities to students in the South Bronx. Selected out of the more than 300 programs, WHEDCo joined the award’s two other recipients at TASC’s tenth anniversary celebration.
  • In 2008, WHEDCo's After-School Program collaborated with Mayor Bloomberg’s Teen Action Service Learning program and was recently awarded two Teen Action Awards for having the Highest Rate of Participation at 120% of all 60 youth programs participating in Teen Action, and for being the Longest Running Program.
  • On July 10th, 2007, Ms. Biberman participated in an IBLF event on "Global Leadership for Sustainability" in New York City to talk about WHEDCo's role fighting poverty in the Bronx. The event aimed to underscore an increase in IBLF partnerships in North America and to discuss and promote the role of business in tackling global development challenges.
  • WHEDCo President Nancy Biberman spoke on the subject of "Social Entrepreneurship and Global Challenges" at the Royal Botanical Gardens in London at the Annual Council meeting of the International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) on July 5, 2007.
  • In November 2006, the Fannie Mae Foundation named WHEDCo founder and president, Nancy Biberman, a Johnson Fellow. The fellowship recognizes and rewards affordable housing and community development professionals in the not-for-profit sector who have "demonstrated an ability to think creatively, define issues, work collaboratively, and implement innovative solutions." During her fellowship Ms. Biberman will have a greater opportunity to explore the impact of urban renewal on Bronx residents by more fully understanding the Bronx's rich cultural and economic history.
  • Nancy Biberman currently serves as a member of the Women's Poverty Report Advisory Committee at the New York Women's Foundation and on the Advisory Committee for the Urban Assembly School of Business for Young Women.
  • WHEDCO school-based social workers were chosen from more than 545 nominations throughout New York State to be honored as "unsung heroes" at the New York State School Safety Summit in 2003. The awards ceremony took place March 5th and 6th in Albany with the theme, "Students, Families, Schools, Communities...Nobody Left Behind!"
  • WHEDCO Director of Youth Services, Davon Russell, received honorable mention at the 2002 PASESetter Awards for Youth Education.
