For twenty years WHEDco has been a pioneer in creating award-winning housing for low-income families that is environmentally friendly and supports healthy living. We currently offer 260 green apartments to South Bronx families, a number that will double in 2015 when we open our new Bronx Commons development.
We’re also committed to educating tenants on how they can help protect our shared environment and reduce their energy consumption.
Urban Horizons is an adaptive re-use of a former municipal hospital, built in 1926 and gut rehabilitated in 1997. Our ongoing retrofit, which we anticipate will reducing energy costs by 27%, serves as a model for how older, affordable multifamily buildings can go green and cut operating costs.
Intervale Green is the largest affordable Energy Star-certified Multifamily High Rise building in the country. Intervale Green’s energy usage continues to inform the standards and consumption targets for the EPA’s Energy Star Multifamily High Rise program.
Bronx Commons, our upcoming development, will be a 361,000-square-foot mixed-use campus featuring over 290 affordable, LEED-certified apartments for families and live/work space for elder musicians; a public charter school in partnership with Bard College, serving grades 6-12; a rooftop hydroponic farm; and public green space. Located in the Melrose neighborhood, Bronx Commons will also be home to WHEDco’s Bronx Music Heritage Center.
