HOME-BASED CHILDCARE MICROENTERPRISE

Improving the quality of childcare through a proven business model

Through training, licensing assistance, professional support and other resources, WHEDco helps women to build and grow successful home-based childcare microenterprises.

Home-based Childcare Microenterprise Network

The foundation of WHEDco’s childcare work is our fifteen year old Network, whose members receive:

  • Regular monitoring to ensure the health and safety of children
  • Ongoing professional development in childcare
  • Help with budgeting, tracking expenses, debt reduction and smart tax strategies to maximize their earnings

Childcare Improvement Project

Through the Childcare Improvement Project (CIP), WHEDco has grown beyond the Bronx to work with childcare providers in all five boroughs of New York City.

In partnership with New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), the New York City Administration for Children's Services (ACS), and the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA), WHEDco has staff in 22 locations throughout New York City who are screening 45,000 unlicensed childcare providers to ensure that they:
  • Meet minimum health and safety standards
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor against children
  • Are not living with anyone who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor against children

Childcare Improvement Project Training Center

The Childcare Improvement Project Training Center targets legally-exempt informal childcare providers, offering them comprehensive professional development training so they can improve the quality of care they provide, increase their revenues and, if they choose, open fully licensed childcare businesses.

The Training Center operates quarterly, guiding providers through all requirements necessary to become formal, licensed caregivers. Trainings are held in these topic areas:

  • Child Development
  • Health and Safety
  • Nutrition
  • Family Day Care Regulations
  • Marketing
  • Contracts and Policies
  • Accounting and Taxes
  • Liability Insurance
