Family Support

Helping Whole Families; Creating Social Stability

WHEDCo's social workers provide strength-based supportive counseling, crisis intervention, advocacy, education, and comprehensive case management for families. Our holistic approach assists families in becoming emotionally, educationally, and economically stable. WHEDCo provides support and education-focusing on financial literacy, legal issues, public benefits, domestic violence, family planning and much more. By accessing other WHEDCo programs, adults and children can connect to the support system all families need.

In 2007, WHEDCo provided Family Support Services to over 2,704 individuals, offering a holistic approach toFood Pantry treatment and intervention while enabling families to meet their basic needs—shelter, food, and clothing. WHEDCo provided an additional 3,000 community members with access to fresh and nutritious food through the Family Support Services Food Pantry, which was established in 2006 to meet a growing need in the community. Consistent with WHEDCo's holistic approach to breaking down the barriers to opportunity, everyone who receives food pantry items is screened to see if they can benefit from other services.

WHEDCo also works closely with the Department of Homeless Services and shelters throughout the Bronx to help families move from the shelter system into affordable, permanent housing. Last year, WHEDCo staff helps 368 families locate apartments, negotiate leases, enroll children in schools, secure employment, and remain in permanent housing. Following housing placement, WHEDCo provides families with services for eviction prevention, emergency funding, counseling and job placement.
