GREEN HOMES

Energy-efficient and healthy housing strengthens Bronx communities

Urban Horizons, our flagship housing and economic development center in the Concourse/Highbridge section of the Bronx, includes 132 affordable apartments, the Early Childhood Discovery Center, family support services, a commercial kitchen that incubates small food businesses and a primary healthcare center operated by a partner nonprofit.

Take a guided tour of Urban Horizons.

Intervale Green, our newly opened development in the Crotona East section of the Bronx, is the nation’s largest Energy Star certified, multi-family affordable housing development. It has 128 apartments and was completed in 2009.

The Bronx Music Heritage Center, our third project in the pipeline to be built in the Melrose section of the Bronx, will celebrate the rich historical legacy of music and culture in the Bronx. It will have 293 affordable apartments, including apartments set-aside for elder musicians, a music heritage center and community performance space, an arts-based high school, a hydroponic roof garden and open recreational green space.

Community Development: Because the physical environment and quality of life in communities have a profound effect on people, WHEDco fosters safer, healthier and more vibrant neighborhoods surrounding our housing. We work with South Bronx residents to improve safety, commercial development and access to green space in their communities. And because health and wellness are critical to helping people reach their potential and achieve success, we educate residents of our communities about good nutrition and physical fitness.

WHEDco partners with Deutsche Bank to support New York City Green Carts.

"I love cleanliness… I didn’t used to have all of this. I worked hard to make this happen. This is my home. I’m nourishing my family. It’s small, but I put so much love toward it."
