  • 128 energy-efficient and affordable apartments, 39 of which are set aside for families coming out of New York City’s homeless shelter system
  • 85% efficient boilers and hot water heaters, low flow faucets and showerheads, green roofs, Energy Star appliances/fixtures and energy-efficient windows
  • Tight building envelope with superior insulation and good ventilation.
  • Nontoxic building materials and finishes
  • Nearly half an acre of green space, including over 40 new landscaped street trees and a rooftop farm.
  • Art installations that promote the message of conservation
  • Active Living Design elements such as stair prompts and stairwell murals that bring color to the stairwells and promote the use of stairs

Promoting holistic, healthy living

Intervale Green reflects WHEDCo’s commitment to provide beautiful affordable apartments that instill families with pride of place. We promote holistic, healthy living among residents through workshops that teach tenants to use environmentally friendly products and minimize energy and water usage; nutrition and cooking clubs; physical fitness activities; a private backyard where children can play; and a rooftop farm.

Rooftop Urban Farm

With the support of WHEDco, the tenants at Intervale Green grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers on the rooftop. The rooftop farm also provides a green environment that connects tenants through positive social interactions, leading to a greener, healthier community.

Green Roofs

The green roofs at Intervale Green help collect and reduce storm water runoff and improve the air quality in the neighborhood, which has the second highest asthma rate in the Bronx. By diverting water from the City’s sewer system and filtering the water, Intervale Green contributes to cleaner waterways and beaches.

Awards & Recognition

The Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development honored Intervale Green with the 2012 Development of the Year Award, and in 2009 the building was awarded the Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Excellence Award.
