WHEDCo's state-of-the-art, 4,000 square foot commercial kitchen offers emerging food companies access to high quality and affordable kitchen space in a fully licensed environment. It is available on a per diem or monthly basis and fees are competitive for longer-term rentals. It is ideal for caterers, bakers, food and beverage manufacturers in need of equipment and unable to afford a commercial kitchen.
The WHEDCo kitchen is at its highest level of utilization (roughly 80%) in five years. Manufacturers in our kitchen today create, store, and pack a variety of specialty food products including: empanadas and other specialty Latino foods, gourmet meals for infants, vegan baked goods and fat-free baked goods. Existing business, Rasol Empanadas, expanded its space in the kitchen by two-fold in order to satisfy surging demand for its product. The new tenants include Evie's Organic Gourmet, a manufacturer of high-end baby food products and frozen ready-to-eat meals that are delivered to the doorstep; Adepa Foods, a producer of Ghanaian shito sauce (spicy red sauce popular in West Africa); and Munchies Cookies, a vegan cookie manufacturer that just landed a contract with Whole Foods. The newcomers and attendant expansion added approximately 15 new jobs to the South Bronx food-manufacturing sector, with potential for a great deal more growth.
